In the late 80s and 90s, latex gloves were the gold standard of medical gloves. They were deemed the best as they provide good protection from blood-borne pathogens, high level of flexibility, as well as protection and comfort.
However, an increase of allergic reactions in users and patients caused the industry to look for a latex-free alternative. Latex gloves are still available and used as long as latex allergies are not an issue. The rest of the industry has moved towards nitrile.
